Statutes of the Pakistan Psychoanalytic Society

Preamble

The Pakistan Psychoanalytic Society (PPS) is a non-profit scholarly and clinical association dedicated to the study, transmission, and formation of psychoanalysis in Pakistan.

The Society is oriented by the teaching of Sigmund Freud as renewed by Jacques Lacan. It promotes psychoanalysis in dialogue with the work of the World Association of Psychoanalysis (WAP), the New Lacanian School (NLS), the École de la Cause freudienne (ECF), and other psychoanalytic institutions with which it maintains relations of collaboration.

Without compromising its orientation, the aims of the Society are:

  • to promote the study, practice, transmission, and formation of psychoanalysis in Pakistan;

  • to encourage clinical, theoretical, and interdisciplinary research in psychoanalysis;

  • to foster dialogue between psychoanalysis and the university, psychiatry, psychology, the social sciences, philosophy, literature, and the arts;

  • to develop working relationships with psychoanalytic societies and institutions throughout the world;

  • to support the formation of psychoanalysts through sustained work, clinical discussion, seminars, cartels, and supervision, according to the aims of the New Lacanian School and the World Association of Psychoanalysis.

 

The Society welcomes those who demonstrate a genuine desire to work in psychoanalysis and supports what Jacques-Alain Miller has termed a "transference to work."

Article 1 – Name and Duration

 

The name of the association shall be the Pakistan Psychoanalytic Society (PPS).

 

The duration of the Society shall be unlimited. Psychoanalysis, unlimited.

Article 2 – Aims

 

The aims of the Society are to advance psychoanalysis through teaching, research, publication, and clinical dialogue. None of this is aimed at replacing the promotion of cartel work, sueprvision, and one's own analysis.

The Society pursues these aims through activities including, but not limited to:

  • seminars;

  • conferences;

  • public lectures;

  • reading groups;

  • cartels;

  • clinical presentations;

  • supervision;

  • workshops;

  • publications;

  • online teaching;

  • collaborative research;

  • analysis;

  • partnerships with universities and psychoanalytic institutions.
     

Article 3 – Membership

 

Membership of the Society signifies an active commitment to the work of psychoanalysis through the initiative of each one who takes it up through participation in the life of the Society.

Applications for membership shall be submitted to the President or Executive Committee.

​

The President or Executive Committee may invite one or more members to meet with the applicant before making a recommendation.

​

Membership must be demonstrated to be in line with the work of the Society in the orientation of the New Lacanian School, with one's own psychoanalytic formation or the promotion of its conditions, and shall be decided by the President until such time as conditions permit an Executive Cartel of members, constituted on the basis of analytic desire, to assume this responsibility.

The Society may establish different categories of membership, including:

  • Executive Committee (President, Secretary, Treasurer, Reading Seminar Coordinator, Clinical Section Coordinator);

  • General Members;

  • Associate Members;

  • Student Members;

  • Honorary Members.
     

Members shall pay annual membership dues according to the membership category established by the Executive Committee. During the initial years of the Society, membership dues may be reduced, waived, or otherwise modified at the discretion of the Executive Committee.
 

Membership in the Pakistan Psychoanalytic Society does not imply voting rights or the authority to make decisions on behalf of the Society. Membership in the Pakistan Psychoanalytic Society does not constitute membership in the World Association of Psychoanalysis or the New Lacanian School.

Article 4 – Executive Committee

 

The affairs of the Society shall be administered by an Executive Committee.
 

The Executive Committee shall consist of:

  • President;

  • Secretary;

  • Treasurer;

  • Reading Seminar Coordinator;

  • Clinical Section Coordinator.


The Executive Committee shall:

  • oversee the administration of the Society;

  • organize scientific and educational activities;

  • manage finances;

  • admit members;

  • establish committees and working groups;

  • represent the Society nationally and internationally;

  • develop collaborations with universities and psychoanalytic organizations.


Officers shall normally serve for terms determined by the Executive Committee and may continue in office according to the needs of the Society.


Vacancies may be filled by appointment of the Executive Committee.


Article 5 – Amendments


These Statutes may be amended only under such circumstances as an Executive Committee constitutes itself on the basis of analytic desire and a commitment to work. Otherwise it is determined by the President, whose analytic desire ensures an eventual permutation within the Executive Committee under the condition of analytic desire and a commitment to work.


Article 6 – Dissolution

 

The Society may be dissolved under such circumstances as its psychoanalytic orientation has been fundamentally compromised by prevailing discourses or institutional pressures, rendering the continuation of its work impossible.
