PREAMBLE

The Pakistan Psychoanalytic Society (PPS) is a non-profit society dedicated to the study, elaboration, transmission, and practice of psychoanalysis in Pakistan.
 

The Society takes its orientation from the teaching of Sigmund Freud as renewed by Jacques Lacan and seeks to contribute to the existence and transmission of psychoanalysis in Pakistan.
 

The Society is committed to the specificity of psychoanalysis and to the ethical and clinical consequences of the Freudian discovery as developed in the teaching of Lacan.
 

The Society seeks to establish and maintain working relations with the New Lacanian School (NLS), the World Association of Psychoanalysis (WAP), and other institutions and associations working in the field of psychoanalysis. Any future affiliation with the NLS shall be subject to the procedures and decisions of the School.
 

The Society welcomes those who demonstrate a desire to work in psychoanalysis and seeks to cultivate what Jacques-Alain Miller has called a “transference to work.”
 

The Society recognises that psychoanalytic formation cannot be reduced to the acquisition of knowledge or professional training. It therefore seeks to create the conditions for sustained work in one’s own analysis, clinical supervision, and cartel work, without foregoing reading and clinical seminars.
 

The Society maintains an open relationship with the university, the humanities, the social sciences, psychiatry, psychology, literature, the arts, and other fields of knowledge, while preserving the specificity of psychoanalytic discourse.
 

 

ARTICLE 1 — NAME AND DURATION

1.1

The name of the association shall be the Pakistan Psychoanalytic Society (PPS).

1.2

The Society shall have an unlimited duration, subject to the provisions concerning dissolution contained in these Statutes. Psychoanalysis, unlimited.

 

 

ARTICLE 2 — ORIENTATION AND AIMS

2.1

The Society is oriented by the teaching of Freud as renewed by Lacan.

2.2

Its aims are:

a. to promote the study, practice, elaboration, and transmission of psychoanalysis in Pakistan;
 

b. to contribute to the formation of psychoanalysts and to the conditions that make such formation possible;

c. to sustain clinical work, clinical discussion, and supervision;
 

d. to promote cartel work, as a practice of provoked elaboration, registered with the New Lacanian School;
 

e. to organise seminars, reading groups, conferences, public lectures, and other forms of sustained study;and thereby to encourage psychoanalytic research and publication;
 

f. to establish working relationships with psychoanalytic institutions and practitioners internationally, particularly within the Lacanian orientation; and to present an Eros for the scattered and ill-assorted who take an interest in Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis in Pakistan;
 

g. to foster dialogue between psychoanalysis and other fields, including philosophy, literature, the arts, psychology, psychiatry, the social sciences, and the university;
 

h. to contribute to the development of a durable institutional presence for psychoanalysis in Pakistan.

2.3

The Society recognises that seminars, conferences, teaching, and research do not substitute for one’s own psychoanalytic experience, clinical supervision, or the work of the cartel.

2.4

The Society shall not present participation in its educational or scholarly activities as constituting psychoanalytic formation in itself.

ARTICLE 3 — MEMBERSHIP

 

3.1

Membership of the Society signifies an active commitment to the work of psychoanalysis and to participation in the life and aims of the Society, typically on the basis of work for the advancement of the society already conducted in the preceding year.

3.2

Membership shall be open to persons who demonstrate an interest in psychoanalysis and a willingness to contribute to the work of the Society.

3.3

Applications for membership shall be submitted according to procedures established by the Society.

3.4

The Executive Committee may invite an applicant to meet with one or more members of the Society before determining an application.

3.5

In considering applications, the Society may take into account the applicant's engagement with psychoanalytic work, participation in the activities of the Society, and commitment to its orientation and aims.

3.6

The Society may establish different rights and responsibilities for each category of membership.

3.7

Membership dues shall be determined by the Executive Committee. The Society may reduce or waive dues where appropriate.

3.8

Membership of the Pakistan Psychoanalytic Society does not by itself constitute membership of the New Lacanian School or the World Association of Psychoanalysis.

3.9

Membership of the Society shall not, in itself, constitute recognition of an individual as a psychoanalyst.

3.10

Participation in the Society's activities, including seminars, cartels, clinical discussions, and public events, shall not in itself confer any professional or institutional title.
 

 

ARTICLE 4 — FORMATION AND WORK

4.1

The Society considers the formation of psychoanalysts to be inseparable from sustained engagement with psychoanalytic work, one’s own analysis, and engagement in cartels of registered with the School.

4.2

The Society shall seek to establish conditions for:

a. one's own psychoanalysis;

b. clinical supervision;

c. clinical presentations and discussion;

d. cartel work;

e. sustained study of Freud, Lacan, and the psychoanalytic tradition;

f. seminars and programmes of elaboration;

g. writing and publication;

h. encounters with analysts and institutions working in the Lacanian orientation.

4.3

The Society may invite analysts from Pakistan and abroad to participate in seminars, supervision, conferences, clinical activities, cartels, and other forms of work.

4.4

Where appropriate, the Society shall seek sustained relations with analysts and institutions belonging to the New Lacanian School and World Association of Psychoanalysis.

ARTICLE 5 — CARTELS

5.1

Cartel work shall constitute a central form of elaboration within the Society.

5.2

The Society shall encourage the formation of cartels among its members and participants.

5.3

Cartels shall ordinarily be composed of a small number of participants working on a defined question or theme, together with a plus-one where appropriate.

5.4

The Society shall encourage members participating in cartels to pursue their own question and to contribute to the collective elaboration of psychoanalytic work.

5.5

The Society may organise events through which cartel work can be presented, discussed, and transmitted.

 

ARTICLE 6 — CLINICAL WORK AND SUPERVISION

6.1

The Society shall seek to develop a clinical dimension appropriate to its orientation.

6.2

This may include:

a. clinical presentations;

b. case discussions;

c. clinical seminars;

d. supervision;

e. study of Freud and Lacan concerning the clinic;

f. exchanges with analysts and clinicians working within the Lacanian orientation.

6.3

The Society shall respect the confidentiality of clinical material and shall establish appropriate procedures governing the presentation and discussion of clinical cases.

6.4

The Society shall not equate professional qualification in psychology, psychiatry, counselling, or another discipline with psychoanalytic formation.
 

 

ARTICLE 7 — TRANSMISSION AND PUBLIC WORK

7.1

The Society shall seek to make psychoanalysis present in the cultural and intellectual life of Pakistan.

7.2

It may do so through:

• public lectures;

• conferences;

• seminars;

• publications;

• journals and digital publications;

• podcasts and other media;

• university collaborations;

• reading groups;

• exhibitions and cultural events;

• interdisciplinary research;

• other forms of public transmission.

7.3

Public transmission shall preserve the specificity of psychoanalysis and shall not reduce psychoanalytic concepts to general psychological, therapeutic, or self-help discourse. Moreover, our Society shall retain its orientation by positioning itself within the Freudian field, as oriented by the teachings of Jacques Lacan. We shall be further guided by the compass provided by Jacques-Alain Miller, particularly in his interpretation of the “Pass,” and the “School.” 
 

 

ARTICLE 8 — RELATIONSHIP WITH THE NEW LACANIAN SCHOOL AND WORLD ASSOCIATION OF PSYCHOANALYSIS

8.1

The Society is independent of the New Lacanian School and the World Association of Psychoanalysis unless and until a formal institutional relationship is established.

8.2

The Society seeks, through sustained work and the development of an active psychoanalytic community, to establish a relationship with the New Lacanian School. We shall make active measures to consult with the Executive Committee of the New Lacanian School for crucial decisions in relation to the politics of the Pakistan Psychoanalytic Society.

8.3

The Society may seek recognition as an Initiative, Affiliate Group, or other form of institutional relationship recognised by the NLS, where and when appropriate.

8.4

Any affiliation with the NLS shall be subject to the procedures, requirements, and decisions of the School.

8.5

The Society shall not represent itself as an NLS-affiliated Society, Group, or other NLS body unless and until such status has been formally granted.

8.6

Where an institutional relationship with the NLS is established, the Society shall conduct itself in accordance with the requirements of that relationship.
 

 

ARTICLE 9 — EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

9.1

The affairs of the Society shall be administered by an Executive Committee.

9.2

The Executive Committee shall ordinarily consist of:

• President;

• Secretary;

• Treasurer;

• Seminar and Study Coordinator;

• Clinical Coordinator.

9.3

The Executive Committee shall:

a. administer the affairs of the Society;

b. implement its aims and activities;

c. organise seminars, conferences, cartels, clinical activities, and other programmes;

d. oversee the Society's finances;

e. consider applications for membership;

f. establish committees and working groups where appropriate;

g. maintain relations with psychoanalytic institutions nationally and internationally;

h. represent the Society in its institutional relations;

i. ensure that the Society's activities remain consistent with its Statutes and psychoanalytic orientation.

9.4

The Executive Committee shall act collectively and shall not transfer the institutional responsibility of the Society to any single officer. The executive committee should be made up of those who are in analysis, have a desire to promote the transmission of psychoanalysis in Pakistan, and have contributed work in preceding years demonstrating so.

9.5

The President shall coordinate the work of the Executive Committee and represent the Society's interests where appropriate.

ARTICLE 10 — TERMS OF OFFICE AND PERMUTATION
 

10.1

Members of the Executive Committee shall normally serve two-year terms.

10.2

Members may be reappointed for a further term in accordance with procedures established by the Society.

10.3

The Society shall seek regular renewal and permutation of its administrative responsibilities.

10.4

Vacancies arising between elections may be filled by the Executive Committee until the next General Meeting.

 

ARTICLE 11 — GENERAL MEETING

11.1

The Society shall hold a General Meeting at least once each year.

11.2

The General Meeting shall receive reports concerning the Society's activities and finances.

11.3

The General Meeting may elect or confirm members of the Executive Committee in accordance with procedures established by the Society.

11.4

The General Meeting shall provide a forum for members to deliberate upon the direction and development of the Society.

ARTICLE 12 — FINANCES

12.1

The Society shall be a non-profit association.

12.2

Its income and property shall be applied solely toward the achievement of its aims as outlined in these statutes.

12.3

No portion of the Society's income or property shall be distributed to members except for reasonable reimbursement of authorised expenses or payment for properly authorised services.

12.4

The Society's sources of income may include:

• membership dues;

• event fees;

• donations;

• grants;

• publication income;

• institutional support;

• other sources consistent with the Society's aims.

12.5

The Treasurer shall maintain proper financial records and shall present an annual financial report to the Society.

12.6

The Society shall seek transparency and accountability in the administration of its financial affairs.

ARTICLE 13 — INSTITUTIONAL INDEPENDENCE

13.1

The Society shall remain independent (in terms of its executive function and orientation) of political parties, universities, and commercial interests.

13.2

The Society shall not subordinate its psychoanalytic orientation to the interests of any external institution, sponsor, donor, or individual.

13.3

The Society may collaborate with universities, professional associations, cultural institutions, and other organisations where such collaboration is consistent with its aims and orientation.

ARTICLE 14 — ETHICS AND CONFIDENTIALITY

14.1

The Society shall uphold the ethical conditions necessary for psychoanalytic work.

14.2

Members participating in clinical activities shall respect the confidentiality of patients and clinical material.

14.3

The Society may establish separate policies governing clinical confidentiality, safeguarding, professional conduct, conflicts of interest, and other matters requiring detailed regulation.

14.4

Nothing in these Statutes shall be interpreted as permitting the Society to exercise authority over an individual's personal analysis.

ARTICLE 15 — DISSOLUTION

15.1

The Society may be dissolved by a two-thirds majority of members entitled to vote at a duly constituted General Meeting, subject to applicable law; or by the committee of the School (NLS).

15.2

No remaining assets shall be distributed among the members of the Society. Those assets should be transferred to an adjacent Society whose interests align with these statutes.
